Chevrolet Camaro problems by year

2024 Chevrolet Camaro Recommended

Final-year sixth-gen Camaro: the early 8-speed shudder and power-steering complaints are long resolved, complaint volume is low, and it pairs sharp Alpha-platform handling with strong V6/V8 value. Knocks are poor visibility, a tiny rear seat and small trunk, and that it is the last model year.

2023 Chevrolet Camaro Recommended

Mature, well-sorted sixth-gen Camaro with very few complaints; excellent handling and a strong engine range. The only real drawbacks are practicality: bad outward visibility, a cramped back seat and a small trunk.

2022 Chevrolet Camaro Recommended

Refined late sixth-gen Camaro: low complaint volume, settled transmissions, and a great driving experience. Visibility, rear-seat room and cargo space remain the lone weak points.

2021 Chevrolet Camaro Recommended

One of the best used Camaros: the sixth-gen's early transmission and steering bugs are behind it, reliability complaints are minimal, and it drives brilliantly. Packaging compromises (visibility, rear seat, trunk) are the only caveat.

2020 Chevrolet Camaro Caution

Improved sixth-gen with the early 8-speed shudder and power-steering issues largely addressed and modest complaint volume; thrilling to drive but cramped and hard to see out of.

2019 Chevrolet Camaro Caution

Sixth-gen Camaro flagged for below-average predicted reliability with lingering 8-speed shudder and electric-steering complaints. Fun and fast, but verify the transmission and steering service history before buying.

  • Intermittent loss of electric power-steering assist with a 'Power Steering Reduced / drive carefully' warning, sometimes accompanied by a momentary electrical power loss while driving; steering becomes heavy and hard to turn.
  • 8-speed automatic transmission shudder, vibration and harsh shifting at roughly 40-80 mph, traced to the torque converter / transmission fluid (dealer TSB 18-NA-355); some cars needed transmission replacement.

2018 Chevrolet Camaro Caution

Sixth-gen still working through 8-speed automatic shudder and intermittent power-steering-assist loss. Sharp handling and strong engines, but inspect the transmission and steering before buying.

2017 Chevrolet Camaro Avoid

Worst sixth-gen year for complaints: heavy 8-speed transmission shudder and electric-power-steering loss-of-assist reports. Thrilling to drive but a higher-risk used pick unless the service history is clean.

2016 Chevrolet Camaro Caution

Sixth-gen launch year: 8-speed transmission shudder, power-steering faults and a fuel-pump recall. The new Alpha platform drives superbly, but early-build bugs make a well-documented example essential.

2015 Chevrolet Camaro Caution

Last fifth-gen year and the most mechanically matured; the main gripe is MyLink radio/electrical gremlins, plus the usual poor visibility and small cabin. A characterful, solid V6 or V8 cruiser otherwise.

  • MyLink radio/infotainment head unit (which controls much of the electrical system) randomly powers off or makes popping noises, taking the audio, climate, chimes and warning alerts with it; ignition key can also stick (recall).

2014 Chevrolet Camaro Caution

Settled fifth-gen Camaro whose recurring complaint is MyLink radio/electrical shutoffs; strong V8 SS value, though visibility and back-seat space are poor.

  • MyLink radio/infotainment head unit (which controls much of the electrical system) randomly powers off or makes popping noises, taking the audio, climate, chimes and warning alerts with it; ignition key can also stick (recall).

2013 Chevrolet Camaro Caution

Fifth-gen Camaro that is mechanically sorted but plagued by MyLink radio/electrical shutdowns; good V8 SS value, with the familiar poor visibility and cramped packaging.

  • MyLink radio/infotainment head unit (which controls much of the electrical system) randomly powers off or makes popping noises, taking the audio, climate, chimes and warning alerts with it; ignition key can also stick (recall).
  • Passenger-airbag occupant-detection sensor falsely shows the front airbag as OFF (or toggles on and off), with reports of cracking in the passenger dash near the airbag; early cars also fall under the Takata inflator recall.

2012 Chevrolet Camaro Caution

Fifth-gen with the new LFX V6; still some V6 oil-consumption and airbag occupant-sensor complaints. An enjoyable rear-drive cruiser with the usual visibility and packaging compromises.

  • 3.6L V6 (LLT/LFX) timing-chain and camshaft-actuator wear plus high oil consumption; early-build engines also reported sudden internal failure with little warning.
  • Passenger-airbag occupant-detection sensor falsely shows the front airbag as OFF (or toggles on and off), with reports of cracking in the passenger dash near the airbag; early cars also fall under the Takata inflator recall.

2011 Chevrolet Camaro Caution

Early fifth-gen: airbag occupant-sensor warnings and 3.6L V6 oil-consumption/timing complaints persist from launch. Good value used, but verify engine health.

2010 Chevrolet Camaro Avoid

Fifth-gen launch year and the most-complained Camaro: 3.6L V6 timing/engine-failure and airbag occupant-sensor issues dominate. Characterful and cheap now, but a higher-risk first-year build.
