Free VIN check: what you get free vs paid

To be clear up front: CarVitals uses a car's year, make, and model to show reliability, recalls, and cost to own. It does not return the VIN's accident, title, or ownership history, that is a paid history report's job. This page maps what a free VIN check actually covers, and what needs paying for.

A VIN is the car's fingerprint, and a surprising amount can be checked for free. But "free VIN check" covers several different things, some free, some not.

What you wantFree?Where
Decode the VIN (make, model, year, engine) Yes Free at NHTSA vPIC and most decoders
Open safety recalls Yes Free at nhtsa.gov/recalls
Theft / salvage flag Partial Free via NICB VINCheck
Full accident history No Paid report (Carfax/AutoCheck)
Title & odometer detail Partial ~$10 NMVTIS report
Reliability, problems, cost to ownthis site Yes Free with CarVitals (not from the VIN's history)

What a free VIN check gives you

For nothing, you can decode the VIN to confirm the year, make, model, and engine match the listing; check open recalls at nhtsa.gov/recalls; and flag theft or salvage through NICB VINCheck. Always confirm the decoded details match what the seller claims, a mismatch is a red flag on its own.

What needs a paid report

Full accident history, mileage verification, and complete ownership records are not free. A roughly $10 NMVTIS report covers title, brand, and odometer; a Carfax or AutoCheck adds the deepest accident and service detail. On a car you are serious about, that is money well spent. More on the options: free Carfax alternatives.

The part a VIN history won't tell you

A VIN check, free or paid, tells you about this car's past. It cannot tell you whether the model year is reliable, what owners report breaking, or what it costs to run. That is where CarVitals comes in, free: open any listing and it shows the reliability verdict, recalls, owner-reported problems by mileage, and cost to own. Pair the two and you have covered a used car properly. Start with the used-car buying checklist.
